About company

Independent Media's history began in 1992, with the first issue of The Moscow Times. Since then, Independent Media has been a major catalyst in introducing new concepts and ideas to Russia's publishing market. The magazines and newspapers that Independent Media has subsequently launched have had a tremendous effect on Russian journalism and society.
Cosmopolitan was the first glossy magazine ever to hit Russia's newsstands. Launched in 1994, it set a standard of quality that was followed by a vast array of Independent Media projects, each a success in its own right.
Today, the Independent Media portfolio of women's glossy magazines includes Cosmopolitan, Magia Cosmo, Cosmopolitan Beauty, Cosmopolitan Shopping, Domashny Ochag, Vkusno i Polezno, Harper's Bazaar, Yes!, Yes-Zvyozdy, Seasons and Yoga Journal. Men's Health, FHM, Popular Mechanics, Robb Report Russia and Esquire form a strong portfolio of men's titles.
Vedomosti, released in 1999 in collaboration with Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal, gave Independent Media a solid presence in the business news arena. In addition, IM publishes Agrobusiness and the Russian edition of Harvard Business Review, the world's most valuable business magazine.
On March 13 of 2006, Independent Media Sanoma Magazines together with its partners - Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal - started producing SmartMoney, a new analytical business weekly.
October 2003 saw Independent Media's first entry into the Russian business literature market with the puchase of a 50% stake in Alpina Business Books.
Na Rublevke, a glossy newspaper for residents of Moscow's prestigious Rublevka district, marked IM's entry into the local media market in 2002.
Independent Media gradually expanded outside of Moscow with The St. Petersburg Times and the St. Petersburg edition of Vedomosti. Cosmopolitan St. Petersburg and Cosmopolitan Ural soon followed, and Cosmopolitan Sibir was launched in 2004. Cosmo Ukraine, Men's Health Ukraine, Cosmo Kazakhstan, Harper's Bazaar Kazakhstan and Esquire Kazakhstan attest to IM's strong presence in Russia's neighboring countries.
Cosmopolitan, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2004, made its readers a unique offer in 2003: their favorite magazine in two formats - regular and mini. This innovation increased the magazine's circulation: it reached 1,000,000 copies in March 2005, which breaks the record circulation of all existing glossy women's magazines not only in Russia, but also in Europe. The record has been registered and entered in Russia's Book of Records which is a part of the world Guinness Book of Records.
In January 2005, the Dutch shareholders of Independent Media Holding B.V. announced that they have entered into an agreement to sell all the shares of IMH B.V. to Sanoma Magazines B.V. (SMI), the magazines division of SanomaWSOY (Finland). Sanoma Magazines is a leading magazine publisher in Europe. SMI is responsible for Sanoma Magazines' activities in Central, Eastern and South East Europe. Sanoma Magazines publishes over 270 magazines in twelve European countries and is market leader in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary and the Netherlands and Russia.
The year 2005 was marked with successful launches of Esquire, Men's Health in mini format and Yoga Journal. In October, Independent Media obtained the publishing license for "New Gardener and Farmer" (Novy Sadovod I Fermer), the analog of Organic Gardening magazine. In the late November, the St. Petersburg office of Independent Media Sanoma Magazines has released the renewed version of the Hermitage glossy magazine, the joint venture of Independent Media and State Hermitage. The magazine is devoted to cultural life and the world of art.
