Professional experience

He is a legendary Soviet ice hockey player, one of the best defensemen in the history of the world ice hockey.
In 1975 through 1989 – he played in CSKA Red Army hockey club. Overall, he played 479 games and scored 153 goals in the USSR championship.
From 1989 through 1994 – he played in the USA for the New Jersey Devils, and from 1994 – 1998 for the Detroit Red Wings.
From 2002 through 2008 – he served as the Chairman of Goskomsport (State Committee for Physical Culture and Sport of the Russian Federation, then Federal Agency for Physical Culture and Sport).
From 2008 through 2016 – he represented the Primorsky region in the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation upper chamber of the Russian Parliament and was the first deputy chairman of the Senate Committee for Social Policy as well as the head of the Russian Senate delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
In 2016 – he was elected the Deputy of the State Duma and holds the position of the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee for Physical Culture, Sport, Tourism and Youth Affairs.
In October 2017 – he was appointed as the State Duma Special Envoy Interparliamentary and International Public organizations on the Development of Sport.
He used to be the Chairman of the WADA Athlete’s Committee and a member of the WADA Executive Committee for several years.
Member of the Board of Directors of the Continental Hockey League.
UNESCO Champion for Sport, awarded with Silver Olympic Order.
